Discord File Size Limit (2026): 20 MB Free, 50 MB Nitro Basic

Discord’s free file size limit is 20 MB per upload. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB, and full Nitro to 500 MB. If your clip fails with “Max file size exceeded,” you are over the cap for your plan — not banned, not glitched.

This page is the 2026 limit table with sources, the August 2026 change that outdates most tutorials, and exactly how to compress a video so it posts as a playable file.

The limit applies to each attachment, not per message thread. You cannot split a 30 MB video across two messages and expect Discord to stitch it back together.

What changed in August 2026?

In August 2026, Discord raised the free upload limit from 10 MB to 20 MB. That is the number most people still quote incorrectly in both directions:

  • Old guides say “compress to 8 MB or 10 MB.” Those targets still work — you just keep less quality than you need to.
  • Some new posts assume Nitro is required for anything over 10 MB. On a free account you can go up to 20 MB now.

Practical rule: free plan → compress to 19 MB (leave ~5% headroom for container and audio overhead). If a tutorial is still teaching 8 MB as the Discord limit, it is behind the times.

Why uploads fail even under the “limit”

A few footguns look like limit bugs:

  1. You aimed at 20.0 MB exactly. The MP4 container and audio track can add a little overhead. Target 19 MB.
  2. You are on a lower plan than you think. Nitro Classic does not get Nitro Basic’s 50 MB. Check User Settings → Nitro.
  3. The file is a cloud link, not an attachment. Some apps replace big files with a link. Discord shows a link; that is not the same as an inline video.
  4. Wrong container/codec for inline playback. The file may upload and still show as a blank pill instead of a player. Prefer MP4 + H.264 + AAC.
  5. Mobile data hiccup. Retry on Wi‑Fi if the progress bar dies mid-upload.

How to compress a video under Discord’s limit

Use the free Discord video compressor — it embeds the real tool with Discord presets already set.

1. Know your cap

Free: 20 MB. Nitro Basic: 50 MB. Nitro: 500 MB.

2. Set the target slightly under

Your planCapTarget to type
Free20 MB19 MB
Nitro Basic50 MB48 MB
Nitro500 MB480 MB

Chips on the Discord page also keep 8 MB and 10 MB for people following older workflows.

3. Post a playable video, not a rejected blob

Export or re-encode to MP4/H.264 (AAC audio). H.265 can be smaller at the same quality, but some Discord clients fall back to a download link instead of an inline player. If embed matters more than size, pick H.264.

4. Check the length vs. the size

File size ≈ bitrate × duration. A 19 MB budget looks like this:

Length~Total bitratePractical quality
30 s~5 MbpsSharp 1080p
60 s~2.5 MbpsGood 1080p / 720p
2 min~1.3 Mbps720p
5 min~0.5 Mbps480p or cut a highlight

If the clip is long and must look clean on a free account, post a shorter highlight instead of crushing five minutes into 19 MB.

Images and other attachments

This article focuses on video, because video is what usually hits the wall. Discord also caps other uploads at the same per-file limit. Images under the cap usually upload fine; huge PNGs from design tools can fail the same way. Compress or export a smaller file — the limit is about bytes, not file type.

If you are mixing a short video and a few screenshots in one message, remember the cap is per file, not per message. Send the video as its own attachment at 19 MB, then add images in a follow-up if needed.

FAQ

What is the Discord file size limit right now?
20 MB for free accounts (August 2026), 50 MB for Nitro Basic, 500 MB for full Nitro. Checked October 2026.

Is Discord’s free limit still 10 MB?
No. It was 10 MB before August 2026. Many search results and tutorials still say 10 MB — use 20 MB (target 19 MB) instead.

How do I send a video larger than 20 MB on Discord without Nitro?
Compress it to 19 MB, trim it, or accept a cloud link instead of an inline upload. For recurring needs, Nitro Basic is the cheapest official fix.

What is the 8 MB Discord limit people mention?
That is a leftover safe target from the 10 MB era (and a popular search). It still uploads, but you no longer need to squeeze that hard on a free account.

Does Discord compress videos automatically?
Discord may re-encode some media for playback. That is not a substitute for hitting the upload cap — the upload must be under the limit first.

Why does my video fail at 19.8 MB?
Overhead and plan rounding. Re-target 18–19 MB and convert to MP4/H.264/AAC if you have not already.

Do it now: open the Discord video compressor, set 19 MB, and post the clip as a real video. For other platforms, see how to compress a video to an exact file size. Shooting on iPhone? Compress a video on iPhone without an app.
