§01 MKV to MP4

Why convert MKV to MP4

Matroska (MKV) is a powerhouse container — multiple audio tracks, soft subtitles, chapters. It is also the format that phones, QuickTime, PowerPoint, and many social apps treat as a mystery file. MP4 with H.264 + AAC is what those apps already speak. Convert once and the clip opens everywhere without installing codec packs or hunting for the right player. Upload the MKV, press convert, download an MP4 — free, no watermark, nothing to install.

§02 Format Facts

MKV vs MP4 — what actually changes

Both hold real video. Compatibility and extra tracks are the gap.

TopicMKVMP4
What it isMatroska — flexible multi-track containerISO MP4 — the universal share format
Multi audio / subsFirst-class multi-track and soft subsUsually one main audio pair (tracks flatten)
Phones / QuickTimeOften refuses the fileYes
Editors / officeHit or missNear-universal import

If the MKV is already acceptable and only too large, compress it instead of converting. Convert when the destination app will not open Matroska at all. Limits checked October 2026.

§03 How It Works

How to convert MKV to MP4 online

Three steps in the browser. No HandBrake queue required.

  1. STEP 1

    Upload the MKV

Drop in the file (other containers work too). Preview confirms the right title before you convert.

  2. STEP 2

    Press Convert to MP4

One job. The result is H.264 + AAC in an MP4 container — the pair players and editors expect.

  3. STEP 3

    Download the MP4

Open it in QuickTime, Messages, PowerPoint, or your NLE without a codec scavenger hunt.

Size vs format

§06 FAQ

MKV to MP4 FAQ

Answers before you unwrap the tracks.

Why won’t MKV play on my iPhone?

iOS and QuickTime have limited Matroska support. Converting to H.264 + AAC in MP4 is the reliable path.

Do I lose the extra audio tracks?

This converter produces a standard single-track MP4 (video + main audio). Multi-language tracks and soft subs are not carried over as separate streams. Keep the MKV master if you need those extras.

Is quality worse after converting?

There is a re-encode to H.264, so it is not bit-identical. Settings target a high-quality H.264 encode; for playback and sharing the difference is usually hard to spot.

Can I convert without HandBrake or VLC?

Yes. Upload here, convert in the browser pipeline, download the MP4. No desktop install.

What about subtitles?

Hardcoded (burned-in) subs stay in the picture. Soft subtitle tracks are not exported as separate streams in this focused converter.

MP4 or MOV after converting?

Pick MP4 for almost everyone. Use our MP4 to MOV tool after if a client literally wants QuickTime.

Is there a watermark or a guest limit?

No watermark. Guests can process three files per day up to 250 MB (failed jobs do not count); signing in brings monthly credits for more and larger files.
