§01 MP3 Compressor

Reduce an MP3 without changing its format

Compress a podcast, voice recording or music file when its MP3 is too large to send. Choose how much of the original file size to keep, set a smaller target in MB, or pick a quality level. The downloaded file remains MP3. Compression re-encodes the audio and can remove audible detail, so this is not a lossless restoration or an audio mastering effect. Keep the original file, compare the output size and listen to the parts that matter before sharing your smaller copy.

§02 Three Methods

Choose what you want to control

Percentage and file-size controls describe bytes, not perceived sound quality.

MethodWhat you chooseWhat to check
PercentageKeep 5–95% of the original size50% means about half the original bytes, not a 50% quality score
Target sizeA positive MB target smaller than the sourceActual output must meet your destination's byte limit
QualityHigher quality, balanced, or smaller fileSize varies with the source; listen to the result
Units1 MB in this tool is 1,048,576 bytesA destination may use different units; leave headroom

Targets of at least 1 KB are accepted, but an extremely small budget may be impractical for long audio. There is no guarantee that every target preserves useful quality. Limits checked 2026-10-16.

§03 How It Works

How to compress an MP3 file

Preview the original, choose a method, then check the exported audio.

  1. STEP 1

    Choose the original MP3

Upload a .mp3 file from your device. The page displays its byte size and, when your browser can read it, duration. The audio player previews your original recording; changing a compression setting does not apply a live effect to that player.

  2. STEP 2

Set a percentage, size or quality

Start with Keep 50% for a simple size reduction. If a destination imposes a limit, choose Target size and enter a smaller MB value with some headroom. For listening quality, use a quality preset and compare the result with the original.

  3. STEP 3

    Compress, download and listen

Start the job to upload the full MP3 for cloud processing. Download the result when it finishes, inspect the measured size, and listen to speech, music and quiet sections. Save the file within about four hours while the temporary link is available.

§04 Size and Sound

Match the budget to the recording

A smaller target leaves fewer bits for every second of audio.

A podcast with music or several speakersStart with balanced or higher qualityVoice separation and transitions into music
A music trackUse a modest reduction firstCymbals, stereo detail and quiet passages
A long recording under a strict size capCalculate whether the budget is realisticConsider trimming unused sections before recompressing

File size depends on duration and the encoded audio bitrate, plus metadata and container overhead. A percentage reduction is not a promise that every listener will hear the same amount of change.

§05 Honest Audio Compression

Keep the source and judge the output

MP3 is already a lossy format. Re-encoding can make a file smaller by spending fewer bits on its sound, but it cannot recover detail removed earlier. Work from the best source you have and avoid compressing an already compressed copy repeatedly.

Percentage means size to keep

Keep 20% aims for roughly one fifth of the source bytes; Keep 75% is a gentler reduction. These are size budgets rather than volume controls. The page labels them explicitly so they are not confused with the percentage to remove.

Use a target below the source

A target at or above the original size is rejected. That avoids a misleading request that could still trigger an unnecessary re-encode. If the original is already small enough, keep it or use a quality preset only when you have a clear reason.

Compression is not loudness processing

This is a file-size compressor. It does not apply studio dynamic-range compression, normalize loudness, remove background noise, or change the volume. Use the audio editor for trimming and volume adjustments, then inspect that export separately.

Keep privacy and timing in mind

The source player stays local, but starting a job uploads the full file for third-party processing. Guest limits and account credits apply. The result link is temporary, so download the copy you want rather than relying on task history as permanent storage.

§06 FAQ

MP3 compression questions

File-size reduction with clear limits.

Can I compress MP3 without losing quality?

This tool re-encodes MP3, so some information can be lost. A modest reduction may be acceptable to your ears, but lossless or indistinguishable output is not guaranteed. Listen to the downloaded copy against the original before deleting or replacing anything.

Can I compress an MP3 to a specific MB size?

Choose Target size and enter a value below the original file size. The job tries to fit that budget; inspect the actual output before uploading elsewhere. Extremely small targets can produce poor quality or fail to fit useful audio.

Does Keep 50% halve the quality?

No. It requests approximately half the original byte size. Perceived quality depends on the recording, source bitrate and listening conditions. A size percentage is not an objective quality percentage.

Why can I not choose a target larger than my MP3?

A larger limit does not require compression. This page rejects it to avoid unexpected processing. If the file already fits your destination, use the original. A quality preset remains available if you intentionally want a new encoded copy.

Is this an audio compressor effect?

No. Audio production uses the word compressor for an effect that changes dynamic range. This page reduces file size and does not provide threshold, ratio, attack, release or loudness controls.

Can I upload WAV, M4A or a video here?

This page accepts MP3 only. Use WAV to MP3, M4A to MP3, or Video to MP3 for other sources. Converting an uncompressed source directly at the bitrate you need can avoid an extra lossy generation.

Is the MP3 compressor free?

The current guest allowance and free-account credits can be used without a watermark. The tool shows an estimated credit charge, and plan limits still apply. Full-file cloud processing starts only after you press Compress MP3.
