§01 GIF Compressor

Keep the animation, reduce the GIF file size

Compress an existing animated GIF for a chat, document or website while keeping it in GIF format. Choose a compression level for a single pass, or try a size target with three bounded trial levels. The result shows its actual byte size and whether it fits your target. Compression can change colors and fine detail; removing frames also changes motion. Keep the original and inspect a complete loop before sharing. If your destination accepts video, converting GIF to MP4 may be a better way to reduce the file.

§02 Size Targets

Try 512 KB, 1 MB, 5 MB or 10 MB

These are convenience targets for your file, not promises about a platform's current upload allowance.

TargetBytes used by this toolWhat to expect
512 KB524,288 bytesDemanding for a long or detailed animation
1 MB1,048,576 bytesA compact animation; check legibility and motion
5 MB5,242,880 bytesMore room for detail, but not every service accepts it
10 MB10,485,760 bytesCompare against the destination's actual byte limit

Check the requirements for the specific message, emoji, sticker or upload type. A 512 KB preset is not a universal Discord limit. Limits checked 2026-10-16. Full breakdown: Discord file-size guidance.

§03 How It Works

How to compress a GIF

Choose between a simple compression level and a bounded size-target search.

  1. STEP 1

    Choose the original GIF

Drop a .gif file into the tool. The source preview plays locally, and the page reads its dimensions, frame count and stored duration. Check the animation first, especially text, transparent areas and fast movement.

  2. STEP 2

    Choose a level or target

Start at level 75 for a moderate single pass. Higher levels allow more visual change. In size-target mode, the job compares levels 75, 150 and 200. Frame removal and transparency optimization are separate choices and are off by default.

  3. STEP 3

    Download and verify

Start the job to upload the complete GIF for cloud processing. Read the measured output size, check whether your target was met, then download and play the result. If it is still too large, try frame removal or prepare a shorter source instead of assuming another pass will always fit.

§04 Compression Choices

What each control trades away

A small file is useful only if the animation still communicates the right thing.

ControlPotential savingPossible cost
Higher compression levelAllows more lossy compressionColor changes, texture loss or visible artifacts
Remove every other frameEncodes fewer framesMay shorten playback and speed up motion; keep off when timing matters
Optimize transparencyReuses similar areas between framesMay alter edges and subtle color differences
Size-target searchCompares three levels in one jobMore processing time; no guarantee of reaching the target

This tool keeps the source dimensions. It does not crop, resize or shorten an existing GIF. Those changes can help much more when a large animation must fit a very small budget.

§05 Measured Results

A target is a check, not a guarantee

GIF does not have a single universal bitrate control that guarantees any requested number of bytes. Size depends on the palette, repeated regions, dimensions and every frame. This tool tries a fixed set of compression levels rather than running an unlimited loop of jobs.

Prefer the milder result that fits

Size-target mode compares three candidates and returns the lowest compression level that fits. If none fit, it returns the smallest measured result and clearly marks it as above target. The three trials count as one site job and share one displayed credit charge.

Keep all frames unless you choose otherwise

Frame removal is optional. Turning it on removes every other frame in each candidate and can shorten playback or speed up the animation. Keep it off when timing matters, especially for demonstrations where a short frame contains important information.

Check the original size first

If the source is already below your target, the page tells you. You may not need to compress it at all. A re-encoded animation can occasionally be larger, and the result reports that outcome instead of claiming a saving.

Keep a copy after downloading

The source preview stays in your browser until you start. Processing uploads the full file to a third-party cloud service. Results are temporarily stored, with download links normally available for about four hours. Save the version you intend to use.

§06 FAQ

GIF compression questions

Choose the right trade-off for your animation.

Can I compress a GIF to 512 KB exactly?

You can try the 512 KB target, but an exact result is not guaranteed. The tool compares three compression levels, returns a fitting result when available, and reports clearly when the smallest candidate is still above 524,288 bytes. Shorter or smaller source animations may be necessary.

Does this GIF compressor remove frames?

Only when you enable Remove every other frame. The default keeps frames. Removing frames can reduce file size, shorten playback and speed up the animation. Keep this option off when timing matters, and watch the downloaded animation before sharing.

Will my GIF stay animated?

The output remains GIF and is intended to retain the animation. Check a complete loop in the downloaded file and in its destination. An app can still show a still preview or handle animation differently.

Can I compress a GIF without losing quality?

The compression-level control allows lossy changes, so this tool does not promise lossless output. Start with a modest level and compare details. Keep the original if exact pixels or subtle color differences matter.

Can I use this for Discord emojis or stickers?

You can prepare a smaller GIF, but check the current requirements for the exact Discord upload type, including dimensions and accepted formats. Message attachments, custom emojis and stickers have different rules. The preset label does not certify that your file meets all of them.

Why is my compressed GIF still too large?

A long animation, many changing pixels, large dimensions or complex detail can exceed the target even at the strongest trial level. Try frame removal, shorten or resize the source elsewhere, or convert to MP4 if the destination accepts video.

Is GIF compression free and private?

Current guest allowances and free-account credits apply, with no watermark. Preview is local, but starting the job uploads the full file for third-party cloud processing. The download is temporary. Do not treat this as offline processing or permanent file storage.
