§01 Discord

Why Discord rejects your video

Free Discord accounts can upload files up to 20 MB. Anything larger fails with “Max file size exceeded” — even if the video itself is only a few seconds long. Discord raised the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026, but many older guides still tell you to compress to 8 MB or 10 MB. Those targets still work; they just leave unused headroom. For a free server, compress to about 19 MB so container overhead never pushes you over the hard 20 MB cap.

§02 Size Limits

Set the target a little under the cap. These figures are the current official limits — not the numbers circulating in old tutorials.

Discord raised the free upload limit from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026. Limits checked October 2026 — always leave a little headroom for the MP4 container and audio track. Limits checked October 2026. Full breakdown: Discord file size limit.

§03 How It Works

How to compress a video for Discord

Three steps from “file too large” to a clip that posts as a playable video in the channel.

  1. STEP 1

    Upload the clip

Drag an MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM or other video into the compressor above. Phone recordings from iPhone (MOV/HEVC) and Android work too — the output is a widely compatible MP4.

  2. STEP 2

    Pick a Discord preset

Tap 19 MB for a free account, 48 MB for Nitro Basic, or 480 MB for full Nitro. The tool also keeps 8 MB and 10 MB chips for people following older guides. Prefer custom? Type any size in MB.

  3. STEP 3

    Download and post

When the job finishes, download the smaller MP4 — no watermark — and drop it into your Discord channel. It uploads as a real video file instead of a rejected attachment or a cloud link.

§04 Bitrate Math

Can this clip actually fit in 20 MB?

File size ≈ bitrate × duration. Work backward from the Discord limit to see the total bitrate available for your clip.

Video lengthTarget sizeRough total bitrate
15 seconds19 MB~10 Mbps — sharp 1080p is easy
30 seconds19 MB~5 Mbps — clean 1080p with H.265
60 seconds19 MB~2.5 Mbps — 1080p or strong 720p
2 minutes19 MB~1.3 Mbps — 720p recommended
5 minutes19 MB~0.5 Mbps — 480p or accept soft detail
60 seconds48 MB (Nitro Basic)~6.4 Mbps — comfortable 1080p

These are planning numbers, not guarantees. If the picture falls apart, lower the resolution before you starve the bitrate further — or post a shorter highlight instead of the full take.

§05 Playback

Make sure Discord can embed and play it

Discord plays most modern MP4/H.264 uploads inline in the chat. A file that downloads fine but shows as a blank attachment is usually the wrong container or codec. Two settings matter more than the rest:

Ship MP4 + H.264 for the widest compatibility

H.264 in an MP4 container plays inline on mobile and desktop Discord. H.265/HEVC files can be smaller at the same quality, but some clients fall back to a download link instead of an embedded player.

Prefer AAC audio

AAC stereo at 64–128 kbps is enough for clips and game audio. Unusual audio tracks are a common reason a file “works on my machine” but will not embed in Discord.

Watch the aspect and resolution

Discord scales the player to the chat column. 1080p is plenty; 4K wastes bitrate on pixels nobody sees in the embed and makes the file harder to hit under 20 MB.

§06 FAQ

Discord video compression FAQ

The questions people hit when a clip will not upload.

What is the Discord file size limit in 2026?

Free accounts can upload files up to 20 MB. Nitro Basic raises the cap to 50 MB, and full Nitro to 500 MB. In August 2026 Discord increased the free limit from 10 MB to 20 MB — older posts that say 8 MB or 10 MB are outdated but still work as safe targets.

How do I compress a video for Discord without watermark?

Use the free compressor on this page. Set the target to 19 MB (or 48 MB on Nitro Basic), compress, and download the MP4. There is no logo, intro or outro burned into the result.

Why does Discord say my file is too large even after I compressed it?

You are still over the plan cap, or the MP4 container added a little overhead. Re-run the compression with a target of 19 MB for free accounts instead of a full 20 MB, and check you are not on a lower Nitro tier than you think.

Is 8 MB still the right target for Discord?

Not required anymore. 8 MB and 10 MB were the common targets before August 2026. They still upload, but you give up quality you could keep under the current 20 MB free limit. Use 19 MB unless you need an extra-small file.

What format should I use so Discord plays the video inline?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safest combination. The compressor on this page outputs that format by default, including when the source is MOV, MKV or WebM.

Can I compress Discord videos on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on iPhone or Android, choose a clip from your camera roll, pick 19 MB, and download the compressed MP4 when it finishes. No app install is required.

Does compressing for Discord hurt quality?

Some detail is always traded for size. For short highlights under 19 MB, most people will not notice on a phone or laptop screen. For longer recordings, prefer H.265 or 720p over crushing the bitrate of 1080p.

Post the clip, not the error
