§01 Video Orientation

Why a video ends up sideways — and how to fix it

Phone footage shot in portrait sometimes lands on its side after a transfer, a screen recording captures a flipped display, and a webcam preview mirrors the speaker so text in the frame reads backwards. Rotating turns the picture upright in 90° steps; flipping mirrors it left-to-right or top-to-bottom. Pick the combination above, watch the live preview, and export a clean MP4 with the orientation baked in — no watermark, nothing to install.

§02 Pick an Orientation

Which fix matches the problem

Most orientation bugs need one click. Match the symptom below to the control above.

What looks wrongWhat is actually going onControl to pick
Video plays on its sideThe camera stored landscape while you held the phone upright (or the other way around)Rotate 90° or 270° — clockwise vs counter-clockwise until it stands up
Video is upside downThe clip was recorded or exported invertedRotate 180° — flips both axes at once
Text or logos read backwardsThe picture is mirrored, as in a front-camera previewFlip Horizontal — mirrors left and right
Sky is on the bottomThe frame is mirrored top-to-bottom (rare, usually from a bad re-encode)Flip Vertical — mirrors top and bottom
Sideways and mirroredTwo orientation bugs stacked — common on phone exports that also preview mirroredCombine a rotation with a flip — the preview shows the final look

Rotation is applied clockwise in 90° steps and is exact — no quality loss from resampling the picture. Flips are a pure mirror. The export re-encodes to H.264 MP4 so every player shows the corrected orientation without relying on rotation metadata. Limits checked October 2026.

§03 How It Works

How to rotate a video online

Three steps in the browser — no editing suite to install, no watermark on the result.

  1. STEP 1

    Upload the video

Drop in an MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI or any other common format. The preview loads in the page so you can see the current orientation immediately.

  2. STEP 2

    Set the orientation

Tap 90°, 180° or 270° to spin the picture, and add a horizontal or vertical flip if the image is mirrored. The preview updates live — what you see is what you export.

  3. STEP 3

    Export the fixed clip

Press Rotate video and the corrected orientation is rendered in the cloud. Download an MP4 that plays upright everywhere.

§04 What Changes

Does rotating change quality or size?

Orientation is geometry, not compression. Here is what actually happens to the file.

What you changeEffect on the pictureEffect on the file
Rotate 90° / 270°Width and height swap; the picture is turned, not stretchedDuration is unchanged; size stays in the same ballpark
Rotate 180°Same frame size; the picture is turned upside downDuration is unchanged; size stays in the same ballpark
Flip horizontal / verticalA pure mirror — every pixel keeps its sharpnessDuration is unchanged; size stays in the same ballpark
Re-encode to MP4H.264 CRF 21 — visually matches the source for most clipsA short clip is typically a few MB; longer clips scale with duration
Rotation metadata onlyNot used here — the pixels themselves are turnedSome players ignore metadata and still show the wrong way up

Because the export bakes the orientation into the pixels, the result looks correct in every player, chat app and editor — including the ones that ignore camera rotation tags. If the file also needs to be smaller, run the compressor on the rotated result.

§05 Orientation, Precisely

Rotate vs flip — and why the preview matches the export

Rotation turns the frame around its centre in 90° steps. Flipping mirrors one axis. They can be combined: a 90° turn plus a horizontal flip is what some phones call “rotate and un-mirror”. The preview applies the same geometry as the export, so the picture you approve is the picture you download.

90° is clockwise

Press 90° once for a quarter-turn to the right; press 270° for the same amount to the left. Press 180° when the clip is simply upside down.

Flips are independent of rotation

You can flip without rotating, or flip after rotating. The selected change summary always lists both so you know what will be written to the file.

Pixels, not tags

Some tools only set a rotation flag and hope the player respects it. This tool re-encodes with the geometry applied, so WhatsApp, Discord, Twitter and older players all show the right way up.

No account for a first fix

§06 FAQ

Rotate and flip video FAQ

Answers before you turn the frame.

Does rotating reduce video quality?

No. A 90° turn is exact — the same pixels, just oriented differently. The export re-encodes to H.264 at a high quality setting, so the picture looks the same as the source for everyday clips.

What is the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotate turns the picture around its centre in 90° steps (90°, 180°, 270°). Flip mirrors one axis — left-to-right (horizontal) or top-to-bottom (vertical). Use rotate when the clip is sideways or upside down; use flip when text or logos read backwards.

Why is my video sideways after uploading?

Phone cameras often record in one orientation and tag the file so players can turn it. Some apps and chat tools ignore that tag and show the raw pixels — which look sideways. Rotating here turns the pixels themselves so every player agrees.

Can I rotate and flip at the same time?

Yes. Choose a rotation and a flip, and both are applied — rotation first, then the mirror. The live preview and the selected-change summary show the combined result before you export.

What formats can I upload?

MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, WMV and most other common video formats. The output is a standard MP4 that plays everywhere.

Can I rotate a video on my phone?

Yes. The rotation and flip buttons and the preview work with touch in a mobile browser — no app to install.

Is there a watermark?

No. Exports are clean. Guests can rotate one video per day up to 250 MB; signing in brings monthly credits for more and larger files.
