§02 iPhone Ringtone Rules
What iOS expects from a ringtone file
Apple is picky about format and length. Match these constraints once and the file just works.
| Rule | What it means | What to do |
|---|
| Container & extension | iOS only offers M4R files in the ringtone picker | Export as .m4r — this tool names the file for you |
|---|
| Codec | Ringtones are AAC audio inside MPEG-4 (same as M4A) | Keep AAC; do not try to stuff MP3 frames into .m4r |
|---|
| Classic ringtone length | Most guides and apps cap ringtones around 30–40 seconds | Clip the chorus or hook to under 40 s before converting |
|---|
| Text tones / alerts | Even shorter — often a couple of seconds | Use the start/end fields to isolate one note or phrase |
|---|
| File size | Ringtones are tiny; a 30 s clip is well under 1 MB | Do not chase bitrate — 128 kbps AAC is plenty |
|---|
M4R is not a different codec from M4A. It is the same AAC audio with a different file extension so iOS files it under ringtones instead of music. Renaming alone often works, but converting cleanly avoids container quirks. Limits checked October 2026.
